A blow to Shas: The High Court of Justice today (Monday) ordered the postponement of the elections for the position of Chief Rabbi of Tel Aviv, due to the absence of candidates who are in reserve service. This follows a petition filed by members of the city council.

The elections were scheduled to take place this Thursday.

The High Court of Justice ordered the elections to be postponed by a month, a decision that is an achievement for candidates from Religious Zionism.

The ruling comes after candidates from the Religious Zionist Party in several cities did not attend the elections due to being drafted into the reserves due to the war with Iran - and Shas candidates won.

The petition was submitted following the absence of candidates Rabbi Yitzhak Bar Ze'ev, Lt. Col. (res.) Rabbi Ram Moshe Rab'd, Lt. Col. (res.) Rabbi Ben Zion Algazi, Maj. (res.) Rabbi Dov Berkowitz and Capt. (res.) Rabbi Aryeh Levin - all of whom are currently serving under Order 8.

Shas candidate, Rabbi Zebadiah Cohen, head of the rabbinical courts in Tel Aviv, did not serve in the IDF.

This is actually the second time that the court has ordered the postponement of the Tel Aviv rabbinical elections, which were originally scheduled to take place on January 6.
