French President Emmanuel Macron called yesterday (Saturday) for Israel and Lebanon to begin negotiations with the aim of reaching a ceasefire, offering to help advance the talks - and even hosting them in Paris.

In a tweet in Hebrew that he posted on the X network, he criticized Israel for the war against Hezbollah in Lebanon - and called for the attack to be stopped.

In a tweet, Macron wrote: "Yesterday I held talks with President Aoun, Prime Minister Salam, and Parliament Speaker Berri. Every possible step must be taken to prevent Lebanon from plunging into chaos. Hezbollah must immediately stop the dangerous deterioration it is leading to.".

Macron later called on Israel to stop the military action: "Israel must give up a large-scale attack and stop the massive attacks, at a time when hundreds of thousands of people have already fled the bombings. The Lebanese government has expressed its willingness to hold direct talks with Israel. All components of the country should be represented in these talks.".

Macron added: "Israel must respond to this opportunity, open discussions and bring about a ceasefire, find a sustainable solution and allow the Lebanese authorities to fulfill their commitments for Lebanon's sovereignty. France is ready to help hold these discussions and host them in Paris.".

The tweet received a large number of responses, from Israel, Lebanon, and Arab countries.

But one response from the Dutch right-wing leader and ardent Israel supporter Geert Wilders, who also wrote a one-word response in Hebrew, accurately described the French president in light of the call to stop the attacks: "a coward.".
