State of emergency? Public shelters are locked: Bnei Brak City Council member and chairman of the 'Goodness of the City' list, Attorney Rabbi Shlomo Elbaum, today (Wednesday) sent an urgent letter to the mayor and the Home Front Command commander, with a firm demand for the immediate opening of all public shelters - to allow residents to protect themselves and prevent a disaster.

Elbaum warns that there are many public shelters in the city, which the municipality even refers to in its official advertisements as 'regional shelters,' such as shelters located on Admor Magor Street or in the Viznitz neighborhood, where these shelters are defined as municipal shelters that are 'open at all hours' - except that the shelters are closed and locked and residents are unable to enter them when an alert is triggered.

Elbaum's desk received many reports from residents complaining that they had contacted the municipality demanding the immediate opening of the shelters, but that these requests had not been addressed.

According to them, a resident could be assigned to each shelter whose job would be to open the shelter, which is normally used for a variety of activities, and allow residents to hide there until the fury passes.

After receiving no response to his inquiry, Elbaum contacted the Home Front Command Major General and Colonel Sharon Malul, commander of the IDF's IDF Infantry Regiment.

In a conversation with him, it was clarified that the current situation puts many residents in danger who do not have a fire department in their apartment, so the nearby shelter constitutes the closest standard protected space for them - when it would be unthinkable that the place would be locked to them in moments of danger and emergency.
