According to a new 'position paper' published this morning (Wednesday) on Network B, the medical associations are calling on the public to replace food supplements with natural foods.

The position paper is signed by the Pediatric, Family, and Clinical Nutrition Associations of the Medical Association.

According to them, there is a high consumption of food supplements in Israel, and not always for a justifiable reason. According to Ministry of Health data they cite, 71 percent of the population takes food supplements.

The reasons for this are often the need to supplement nutritional deficiencies, and the widespread perception that they improve health and are part of a healthy lifestyle. However, doctors write that there is not always proof of their effectiveness. Doctors emphasize that the supply of food components should come from the food itself, not from food supplements.

The doctors also explain that food supplements as part of public health policy are an essential strategy for closing nutritional gaps, but industrial supplements such as Pro yogurt or protein-enriched snacks and cereals are not necessarily beneficial, and may even mislead the public into thinking that they are healthy products when in fact they are processed foods.
