Shas Chairman Aryeh Deri sharply attacked this afternoon (Wednesday) the silence on the "disgraceful racist remarks," as he put it, by former Prime Minister Ehud Barak toward immigration from Eastern countries, and against the Jewish identity of the country.
In a recording revealed by Yishai Friedman on Channel 14, Barak is heard presenting his plan to change the demographics of Israel.
"We need to break the rabbinate's monopoly on marriages, funerals, who is a Jew, and open the gates to mass conversion to Judaism," said Barak. "And unlike Israel's founding fathers who had to accept population from Arab and North African countries - this time we can be more selective.".

The full words of the Shas chairman: "Ehud Barak, as you know, is a thinker, the head of the tribe of the 'kaplanists' and the leftist elite, said terrible things: 'We need to take control of the institution of the rabbinate, of the converts, in order to bring a mass movement of Gentiles here. But not like the founding fathers did, who brought Jews from the countries of the East - they had no choice - but to bring only from Europe, from places where we would control the state here.'.
""Barak knows that the Eastern Jews, the Sephardim, who have an innocent faith from home, a true faith in the Creator - we cannot win with them, we cannot create a secular state.
""Imagine if Netanyahu had said the same things, how Bennett and Eisenkot and all the programs and Channel 12 would have jumped on the bandwagon with the headline: 'Netanyahu the racist, how he talks about the Mizrahi people.'".

""Imagine if I, Aryeh Deri, were to say the same things about immigration from the Soviet Union, what would Lieberman and Ben Caspit and all the others there do about the racist remarks? Everyone is as silent as a fish, no one is talking about Ehud Barak and the racist things he said.
""But you, the people of the right - know the truth, do not be afraid of them! We will win, we will win with the help of God. We will continue to protect the Land of Israel, the Torah of Israel and the people of Israel.".
