Prison Service Commissioner Kobi Yaakovi warned this morning (Tuesday), during a discussion in the Knesset's National Security Committee, about terrorists who have lost hope of being released from prison - and who could create unrest in prisons.

In a review of the Prison Service's activities in a committee headed by MK Zvika Fogel of Otzma Yehudit, the IPS commissioner warned: "The terrorists imprisoned here have operational capabilities. The hope they had of being released has turned into despair, and that's what we have here at home. There is a feeling that the war of revival is at a low intensity, but inside the prisons we are certainly on the threshold of an event.".

Gonder Avihai Ben Hamu added: "Drafts of prison wings prepared by prisoners were seized in the past year.".

Yacoubi presented a real worsening of the reference scenarios in the security wings, a transition from the battlefields to the prison arena, and a high level of danger among security prisoners. He said that in order to "deal with the load," 4,115 new beds and mattresses have been added since October 7.

The IPS Commissioner also presented the "prison situation": "There are currently 22,573 prisoners held in prisons. 13,343 of them are criminal prisoners and 9,230 are security prisoners. Since October 7, an increase of 2,300 prisoners has been recorded, and a total increase of 3,400 prisoners since 2021.".

According to the manpower data presented by the IPS, the IPS standard is 12,066 prison fighters and the current number is 10,500.

The commissioner defined an increase of 1,600 faculty members this year, and according to him, the 1,604th candidate was summoned today. In addition, there is a sharp increase in recruitment in 2025 to 1,476 recruits, and a decrease of 23% in resignations compared to 2024.
