The Supreme Court, sitting as the High Court of Justice, issued a conditional order today (Tuesday) on petitions filed against the law to change the composition of the Judicial Selection Committee.

The judges' decision determined that an additional hearing on the petitions would be held by an expanded panel of 11 judges.

The law, which was approved by the Knesset last March, changes the structure of the committee so that it remains composed of nine members: the President of the Supreme Court, two Supreme Court justices, two ministers - including the Minister of Justice, two MKs from the coalition and the opposition, and two public representatives who will be appointed by the coalition and the opposition in place of the representatives of the Bar Association.

Following the High Court of Justice's decision, Justice Minister Yariv Levin issued a harsh response, accusing the judicial system of illegally interfering with the Basic Law.

He said, "A handful of judges, who are accustomed to choosing their family members and friends in chambers, and disqualifying those they do not like, dare to interfere in a basic law that puts an end to their unacceptable practice.".

Levin added: "Judicial intervention in the Basic Law is illegal and undermines the foundations of democracy. The order that was issued is null and void. I call on the Knesset to stand firmly against this unacceptable move.".

Political commentator Amit Segal responded: "Really amazing. As long as [Judge Yosef] Elron was around and they didn't want him on the panel, they pushed and pushed. From the moment he retired, they issued a conditional order. Political maneuvers that are more suited to the Likud center.".
