The United Torah Judaism faction issued a strong protest statement this evening (Monday) following the violent incidents by extremists against Haredi Knesset members.
Its statement, titled "The United Torah Judaism faction strongly protests and condemns the violence against rabbinic emissaries," stated:
""The United Torah Judaism faction protests and condemns in the strongest terms the acts of violence that have occurred in recent days against rabbinical emissaries and ultra-Orthodox members of Knesset.
""At the faction meeting, its members rejected with disgust the baseless argument that these were 'protests' - these were serious acts of violence! Something that has no place anywhere and in no way.".
""The Knesset members noted that the severe acts of violence serve as material for those who sow evil and harass Torah students, and give them more reasons to attack, while portraying Torah students as a violent public.
""The faction members emphasized that they will continue to work with all their might for the study of Torah and Torah students in the Land of Israel at all times according to the instructions and guidance of the great men of Israel.".
Shas Chairman Aryeh Deri also addressed the attack against MK Yoav Ben-Zur on Saturday night at his faction meeting.
Deri said: "We all denounce and condemn the serious attack on MK Yoav Ben-Zur that occurred on Saturday night. When we hear Lieberman today and the degrading way in which he speaks about Torah students following the incident - we understand the magnitude of the desecration of God that those rioters committed.".
He added: "The incident itself was a real danger to life, which could have easily deteriorated into a much more serious outcome. And to our dear friend, Rabbi Yoav, we say: Be strong and courageous, God is with you, Hero of valor!""
