US President Donald Trump officially announced tonight (Friday night) that Kazakhstan is joining the 'Abraham Accords' - the American-brokered normalization initiative between Arab countries and Israel, which he promoted during his first term.

In a post he published on his social network Truth Social, Trump wrote: "I just had an excellent conversation between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev. Kazakhstan is the first country in my second term to join the Abraham Accords - the first of many. We will soon announce an official signing ceremony.".

The announcement comes after US envoy Steve Witkoff announced last night that another country will be announced tonight to join the Abraham Accords.

Witkoff told a business forum in Florida that he would return to Washington for the announcement. He declined to say which country.

The Kazakh government later addressed for the first time its expected accession to the Abraham Accords, stating that it was a "natural and logical continuation of Kazakhstan's foreign policy.".

Kazakhstan has maintained relations with Israel since 1992. A senior American official said: "The move is intended to revive the Abraham Accords as a framework for US-led cooperation between Israel and the Arab and Muslim world.".

Last month, Trump said he expects the Abraham Accords to expand soon, and expressed hope that Saudi Arabia would join the agreement.

He repeated the same thing yesterday during his remarks to the media.

'The 'Abraham Accords' were first signed in September 2020 at the White House, between Israel, the United Arab Emirates, and Bahrain, mediated by the Trump administration.

Morocco and Sudan later joined the initiative.
