The Shin Bet and the police revealed a serious espionage case this morning (Sunday): Yosef Ein Eli, 23, from Tiberias, was arrested in September on suspicion of having connections with Iranian intelligence officials and carrying out security missions under their direction - in exchange for a financial payment.
An indictment was filed against him today in the Beer Sheva District Court.
The Shin Bet investigation and Lahav Unit 433 revealed that, starting in late 2024, Ein Eli was in continuous contact with Iranian intelligence officials.
Under their guidance, he provided information and photos about hotels in the Dead Sea region, utilizing his work at one of the hotels, and also provided additional information about tourist sites in the south of the country.
The investigation revealed that the Iranian operatives asked him to perform additional security tasks - including gathering information on the Minister of National Security, establishing a 'terrorist team' in Israel, throwing a grenade at a house, transmitting information on criminal elements and crime families, providing details of IDF soldiers, setting fire to vehicles and taking photographs from inside IDF bases.
Some of the missions were not carried out, but Ein Eli received digital payments from Iranian officials for the actions he carried out.
The General Security Service stated: "This is another attempt by Iranian intelligence elements to recruit Israeli citizens and exploit them for intelligence and espionage purposes, using money and anonymous digital communication.".
