Defense Minister Yisrael Katz declared this evening (Saturday night) that the demilitarization of the Gaza Strip, through the destruction of all of Hamas' terror tunnels and the disarmament of the organization, is the most important strategic goal for completing the victory in Gaza.
He admitted that despite two years of heavy fighting in Gaza, 60% of the tunnels still exist.
Defense Minister Israel Katz: "The super-strategic mission to realize the great victory achieved by the heroic IDF fighters against the Hamas terrorists in Gaza is to demilitarize Gaza through the complete destruction of the terror tunnels, 60% of which still exist - alongside the disarmament of Hamas.".
Katz noted: "I have instructed the IDF to place the issue of destroying the tunnels as the central mission now in the yellow area under our control, alongside the protection of the soldiers and the settlements.".
The Minister of Defense emphasized the importance of continuing the dialogue with US representatives: "We are holding a dialogue with US representatives, from the Vice President and the Secretaries of State and War, through the US President's envoys to the CENTCOM commanders, about the importance and criticality of the issue, and about their need to implement President Trump's plan and find a way to thoroughly deal with dismantling and destroying all the terror tunnels in the remaining area under their responsibility, alongside disarming Hamas.".
He added: "The most urgent moral task is, of course, the return home of all the deceased hostages, and we will do everything to realize this sacred and important mission.".
