President Yitzhak Herzog will award United States President Donald Trump the "Presidential Medal", Israel's highest civilian decoration, in recognition of his efforts to return kidnapped people.
According to a statement issued this morning (Monday) by the President's Office, the decoration will be awarded to the American president in the coming months - "for bringing about a historic agreement that advances Israel toward the release of the hostages and an end to the war, for his full and steadfast support for the State of Israel, for his special contribution to its security and concern for the well-being of its citizens, and for his commitment to leading the entire region into an era of peace and cooperation.".
The President of the State is expected to announce the awarding of the decoration to Trump during his visit to Israel.
President Herzog said: "President Trump's legacy will be remembered for generations by the State of Israel and the Jewish people. From his uncompromising support for the State of Israel, to the birth of the Abraham Accords that expanded the circle of peace in the region, through the two historic agreements that led to the release of our kidnapped loved ones and saved countless lives, to the bombing of Iran's nuclear program - President Trump's voice has always been one of courage and leadership, and of an uncompromising commitment to the pursuit of peace and humanity.".
He added: "Through his tireless efforts, President Trump has not only helped bring our loved ones home, but also laid the foundations for a different Middle East, built on security, cooperation, and true hope for a peaceful future. It would be a great honor for me to present him with the Presidential Medal of Freedom of the State of Israel.".
The President's Medal is awarded to those who have made an exceptional contribution to the State of Israel or to humanity, through their talent, service, or otherwise.
Upon taking office, President Herzog appointed an advisory committee, headed by retired Supreme Court Justice Professor Yoram Danziger, to periodically recommend worthy candidates for the award. Since then, the president has bestowed the award on prominent figures in Israel and around the world in various fields, including heads of state, key social figures from various sectors, and Jewish leaders in Israel and around the world.
