Firefighters from the Binyamin area worked as Shabbat began to extinguish a sukkah that caught fire on Avni Nazar Street in the city of Modiin Illit.

The forces that arrived at the scene identified a burning sukkah in a residential building, and many residents nearby.

The crews attempted to make contact with the fire source while simultaneously searching for trapped people and conducting heat and smoke release operations.

Chef Kobi Levy, incident commander: "Upon arriving at the scene, we realized that there were many residents near the sukkah that was on fire, and that there was a danger of the fire spreading to additional sukkahs and to the apartments in the building. I ordered the teams to act quickly to put out the fire, while making sure that no one was trapped due to the heat and heavy smoke. Fortunately, the incident ended without any casualties, but with property damage.""

Following the fire, the Israel Fire and Rescue Service is seeking to refine life-saving guidelines for the population:

  1. Matches or any other flammable materials should be kept out of the reach of children.
  2. Electric bicycles may not be charged inside or near the sukkah, and at home only under supervision. If possible, preferably outside the home.
  3. After using an electric hotplate, it should be unplugged, and no cloth or paper should be placed on it.
  4. Candles should be lit safely on a stable surface, away from flammable materials.
  5. Make sure that the electrical connections in the sukkah are safe and that the lighting is not attached to the sukkah.
