The Ministry of Environmental Protection and the Ministry of Health announced last night the capture of mosquitoes infected with the West Nile fever virus in Ramla.
Since the beginning of the season, four cases of patients have been diagnosed.
Because of this, the Ministry of Environmental Protection instructed the relevant local authority to expand monitoring, pest control, and public information activities.
Dr. Shai Reicher, Director of the Pest and Extermination Division at the Ministry of Environmental Protection: ”In routine monitoring operations, mosquitoes carrying the West Nile fever virus were captured in Ramla. Accordingly, the ministry instructed the authority to increase prevention and extermination efforts. We call on the public to protect themselves, dry up stagnant water sources, and cooperate with the authorities to reduce the mosquito population and the risk of bites.“.
Dr. Oren Shetach Katvi, Director of the Zoonotic Diseases Department at the Ministry of Health: ”West Nile fever is a disease transmitted to humans through the bite of mosquitoes that feed on infected birds. It is usually a mild disease without symptoms, but in exceptional cases, serious symptoms such as encephalitis or meningitis may also occur. Since the beginning of the year, four patients with the disease have been confirmed.“
In the summer, due to standing water and hot, humid weather, the risk of mosquito breeding increases.
The responsibility for removing hazards and nuisances originating from sanitary pests in public areas lies with the local authority, but the public is required to assist in the effort in accordance with the following guidelines:
