The Jerusalem Magistrate's Court today (Thursday) extended by five days the arrest of a 60-year-old reserve lieutenant colonel from Ramat Gan, suspected of setting fire to recycling bins near the Prime Minister's residence in the Rehavia neighborhood yesterday.
As a result of the arson, a parked car belonging to a reservist was severely damaged, and residents of nearby buildings were forced to evacuate their homes.
During the hearing, the police presented the judge with a video documenting the suspect at the scene of the incident.
According to the police representative, the suspect was disguised when the acts were committed.
The suspect himself denied the arson during his interrogation and admitted that he was in Jerusalem for personal matters.
Judge Orna Sandler-Eitan ruled that there is reasonable suspicion that the offenses were committed and that there are grounds for danger and disruption.
Another suspect, a man in his 80s, was released to house arrest after claiming that he was not present in the area at the time of the incident.
The police also requested a six-day extension of the arrest of the protester who barricaded himself on the roof of the nearby National Library and lit a smoke candle.
Previously, an indictment was filed against one of the detainees after he set fire to a tire and rolled it in Jerusalem, during a protest against legal reform.
