Opening of the 2016 school year: Degel HaTorah Chairman MK Moshe Gafni toured the educational institutions in the city of Beit Shemesh this morning (Monday), as a guest of Mayor Shmuel Greenberg and Degel representatives in the municipality.
MK Gafni toured schools in ultra-Orthodox neighborhoods and closely followed the opening of the school year in the city.
At the inauguration ceremony of the 'Beit Yaakov-Derech Emuna' school in Beit Shemesh, Gafni addressed the fact that the Ashkenazi seminaries in the city did not open the school year today: "I know that there are problems with the high schools in the city, and therefore I call from this honorable platform to the leaders of Shas - open new educational institutions as is appropriate and befitting a quality public, so that your girls will have a place to study comfortably and extensively, without having to crowd into our institutions, which are growing and the space is too small to accommodate everyone.".
The Ashkenazi seminaries did not open the school year due to their opposition to the municipality's placement lists, which include placement for Sephardic students who do not meet the seminary requirements.
The Shas faction responded to the Degel chairman's words: "The Shas movement's life mission is to establish excellent educational institutions for the Sephardic public, and it has been operating in this way with great success for decades throughout the country.
""Kudos to Rabbi Moshe Gafni, who made it clear how important it is that the Shas movement continue to be strong and independent, and how much the Sephardic public cannot trust any other party to take care of them.".
