A one-year-old and three-month-old toddler was rushed to Assuta Hospital in Ashdod this week after swallowing small magnets that were part of his older brother's game.

A photograph taken at the scene showed that his digestive system contained 12 round magnets, connected to each other in the form of a chain.
The toddler arrived at the emergency room suffering from poor appetite, and a repeat scan revealed that the magnets were still in place. Due to the danger, an emergency gastroscopy was decided upon, during which 10 magnets were removed from the stomach, one of which was already embedded in the mucosa.
Two additional magnets that were in the small intestine later came out naturally, without complications.
Dr. Eitan Damari, Deputy Director of the Department of Pediatrics and a specialist in pediatric gastroenterology, explained: ”It is important to understand that magnets pose a unique and different danger than swallowing coins or other toys. When multiple magnets are swallowed together, they can be attracted to each other through the walls of the intestine or stomach and trap the lining of the digestive tract between them.“.
He said, "This is a condition that could lead to necrosis, ulcers, holes in the intestine and even a life-threatening infection. Even if the child appears to be in good general condition, one must not take it lightly and should immediately seek medical attention if there is any suspicion of swallowing a magnet.".
The toddler's mother: "I want to thank the team for the professional and quick treatment that saved Yishai. I appeal to the parents – do not ignore even the slightest suspicion. In the case of magnets, it is especially dangerous. If there is any concern – go to the hospital immediately."“
The hospital reminds parents that magnets have become very common in recent years, partly thanks to the expansion of purchasing options for products from abroad, and in particular games, which make the presence of magnets more common and even stronger than before. Care should be taken to keep magnetic games out of reach of small children, and to seek medical attention as soon as possible if swallowing is suspected - even of just one magnet.
Dr. Eitan Damari emphasizes: "Any ingestion of a foreign body by toddlers - it is mandatory to go to the hospital immediately.".
