US President Donald Trump announced tonight (Tuesday) that he has initiated a move to convene a summit between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky - with the aim of promoting a peace process and leading to an end to the war that has been going on for three and a half years.

Trump said he spoke with Putin immediately after a series of meetings he held at the White House with Zelensky and European leaders - including French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.

Trump wrote on his social media account TRUTH that his meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and European leaders was successful. He said that following the meeting, he spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin and began promoting a meeting between Presidents Putin and Zelensky, at a location to be determined later.

""I called Putin, and began arrangements for a meeting between President Putin and President Zelensky. After this meeting takes place, we will have a three-way meeting - mine with both presidents," Trump wrote.

Yuri Ushakov, a senior adviser to Putin, told CNN that the conversation between Trump and Putin lasted about 40 minutes and was "frank and constructive." He said Putin expressed support for direct negotiations between Russia and Ukraine.

Officials noted that during talks with Trump, Putin agreed to meet Zelensky within about two weeks.

In a separate post on TRUTH, Trump wrote that "everyone is happy about the possibility of peace between Russia and Ukraine" and noted that further coordination is being carried out by his vice president, J.D. Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and special envoy Steve Witkoff.
