The Ministry of Health updated today (Thursday) that following the discovery of polio virus in wastewater samples in the Jerusalem district, positive samples were also found at additional sites in the center - Bnei Brak, Ramle Lod and the Shafdan.
These findings indicate transmission of the polio virus among the population in these areas as well.
The Ministry of Health mentions that the virus caused paralysis in a 17-year-old boy in December 2024 - therefore, "in order to protect the public from polio, including from the paralysis caused by the virus, the Ministry of Health calls on those who are not vaccinated against polio to urgently complete the vaccination.".
The ministry notes that "the vaccines can be obtained at the milk drops distributed throughout the country and at student health services. If the child's immunization status is unknown, it can be checked on the government's personal website, through the digital vaccination register.".
In the instructions sent today by the Ministry of Health to district and subdistrict physicians, medical directors of health funds, and general hospital directors, it was determined that the current response is based on the following general principles of action: completing vaccinations and closing gaps; tightening clinical monitoring while conducting strict monitoring for early identification of suspected cases of acute flaccid paralysis, and immediately reporting to the Health Bureau any suspected case; continuing increased environmental monitoring in accordance with the established sampling plan.
