Rescue forces called to the scene performed prolonged CPR on him, but were ultimately forced to declare him dead.
Eyewitnesses said that Aboutbol felt unwell after entering the water, and when he came out, he described his feelings to those around him and shortly afterwards collapsed.
He left behind four children.
Aboutbul was born in Kiryat Ata in May 1965. During his military service as an IDF spokesman, he was chosen to participate in a supporting role in the film "Two Fingers from Sidon" - for which he received the Best Actor Award at the Jerusalem Film Festival.
Over the years, he has had a rich acting career in film and television. He starred in the series 'Sabbaths and Holidays', for which he won the Golden Screen Award and the Television Academy Award for Best Actor.
Minister of Culture and Sports Miki Zohar paid tribute to him: "I was very saddened to hear about the sudden death of the late actor Alon Aboutbol. Last night I watched an interview with him, in which he talked about filming a film he recently participated in, and the passion for the profession that radiated from him was evident even after so many years in the field. Alon was an Ophir Award winner and an Academy Award for Television and over the years played a wide variety of characters to which he brought depth and emotion, which left a deep mark on Israeli culture. May his memory be blessed."
