Maggie Tabibi, Channel 14's news anchor, held a special interview today (Monday) with Johnny Moore, chairman of the American Relief Fund, following Hamas' false "starvation" campaign - and Israeli and American efforts to channel humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip.
In recent weeks, Hamas and the United Nations have been running an aggressive media campaign about an alleged famine in Gaza. Can you describe what these situations look like to you?
First of all, there is a deep hunger in Gaza. That is why we are there, that was our mission. We will soon surpass the 100 million meals directly to the people of Gaza that we have provided. From the beginning we said that we could not do it alone, so we turned to international organizations to join us.
At the same time, it is also true that the UN, whether intentionally or not, is complicit in a series of propaganda and disinformation campaigns that have, in effect, turned them into spokespeople for Hamas.
You claimed that the UN's conduct is motivated by political considerations. Can you explain?
This is my theory, but it is based on experience: How is it possible that there are almost a thousand food trucks sitting inside the Gaza Strip that you refuse to distribute, while at the same time using every means available to you to promote the idea that there is not enough food in the Gaza Strip? How can this contradiction be resolved?
I think there are a lot of people who claim to be humanitarians, sitting in suits and ties in Geneva and New York, but they are not humanitarians at all – they are politicians who serve a different agenda.
Is it possible that the task is simply too big for your organization, and that Israel has no choice but to intervene and join in the humanitarian assistance?
From the beginning we said we couldn't do it alone, we had to work with other organizations to meet the needs in the Strip. We don't exist to replace the aid system in Gaza, other organizations.
But when we see violence, robbery, resignations, is it possible that despite your intentions – your efforts have failed?
Of course we didn't fail. How can you say that distributing 100 million meals directly to the residents of Gaza, without even one being hijacked or diverted, is a failure?
I have disclosed publicly available data on the hijacking of UN food convoys over the past year. Approximately 901,000 tons of World Food Program food convoys did not reach their final destination. We exist to solve one problem: to prevent Hamas from hijacking aid.
The UN says we don't meet standards, that we're not professional and all that stuff – it's a bunch of nonsense. They're lying, just look at their activity right now.
The difference between us and the existing agencies is that they don't even try to solve the problem. But what we can say, what we can promise, is that we have delivered, we have proven that it is possible, to distribute millions of meals without the food being stolen.
Why weren't more distribution centers opened beyond the first four?
The plan was always to go from four to eight sites, but once we got going, UN leaders used all their political power around the world to make sure it would be impossible for us to expand.
Our problem, which is why we didn't expand to other parts of the Gaza Strip, was not related to the State of Israel, but to a deliberate policy of the UN, which on the one hand says that they care about the residents of Gaza, and on the other hand says that there is no competition when it comes to helping them. This is corruption.
