As part of the extension of the express line from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem into the city center: The Ministry of Transportation and Israel Railways are beginning construction of the 'Roshelim Khan' station.
The project, which is at the heart of the strategic development plan for the national railway system for 2040, constitutes a central pillar in strengthening Jerusalem's status as the capital of Israel and as a hub for tourism, commerce, culture and transportation.
The extension of the line, which is approximately 5.5 kilometers long, will be carried out entirely in an underground tunnel, and includes the construction of two new stations: 'Yerushalim Merkaz' on Jaffa Street and 'Yerushalim Khan' in the German Colony.
Both stations will be built approximately 60 meters below ground level, similar to the Yitzhak Navon station. The Khan station will be located near significant tourist sites such as the Bell Garden, the station complex, and the Old City, and will offer a new and convenient gateway to the heart of Jerusalem. The new station will provide exceptional connectivity and connectivity, and will integrate with the Blue and Red Light Rail lines, as well as the future cable car to the Old City.
Upon receipt of the necessary permits for the construction of the station, Israel Railways will begin construction work in the coming weeks, which is being carried out in parallel with the Jerusalem Central Station, construction of which began about a year ago.
Upon completion of the work, the train is expected to operate at a frequency of 13 trains per hour in each direction, a significant increase from the current 6 trains, and serve approximately 20,000 passengers per hour in both directions. To this end, parking tunnels for additional trains will also be built.
The project is budgeted at approximately 440 million NIS, of which 50 million NIS was recently approved in the 2025 budget to advance work on the Khan station.
The stations will be built with minimal encroachment and damage to the surface, and will provide maximum accessibility for pedestrians, tourists and residents, in a central location in the heart of Jerusalem.
Minister of Transportation Miri Regev: "Jerusalem is the eternal capital of the people of Israel, and we continue to develop it above and below ground. The extension of the high-speed line will allow every Jerusalemite and every tourist to reach the heart of the city in a fast, convenient and sustainable way. Visitors to the city will be able to take the train to the city center, and from there take a short walk or take the light rail directly to the Old City. Together with the light rail network, the construction of which is progressing at an accelerated pace, Jerusalem will offer optimal public transportation coverage before the end of this decade."
