Prime Minister Avner Netanyahu's son took an unusual step, contacting Wikipedia editors and requesting that the entry about him be removed.
According to a report in Haaretz, the move is sparking a fascinating discussion among the editorial community, which is currently discussing the issue and holding a dramatic vote to approve or reject his request.
This is a rare case in the history of the project in which an object of value, considered a coveted status symbol, requests that its value be completely erased.
Netanyahu wrote: "I am the subject of the value (Avner Netanyahu) and I do not see any importance for the public in the existence of this value. The value is poor in any case." However, it was not clear that this was really Netanyahu, and according to the publication in Haaretz, Netanyahu contacted the Wikimedia Association and verified his identity.
Voting will close in two days, and if the majority of editors decide that the entry is of no interest to the public, it will be deleted.
In 2019, a similar vote was held regarding the entry, but it was ultimately decided to leave it on the site.
Despite Netanyahu's request, some editors oppose the deletion of the entry: "The issue has been discussed several times in the past, including with a vote to delete, and the entry remains intact. This cannot be ignored," Yoav wrote.
On the other hand, another editor wrote: "There is no clear encyclopedic importance, and if the subject of the value requests it, there is no reason to insist."
Another editor wrote: "Currently, there is no benefit to Wikipedia readers from the entry. If he takes important actions in the public arena, there will be benefit, and it will be possible to rewrite the entry."
