Do Israeli security officials believe that Sinwar escaped through tunnels with his brother Muhammad and other Hamas leaders to Egypt? At least that is what was reported today (Tuesday) on the Saudi website Elaf.
The report relies on an unnamed Israeli security source, who said, "Israel has information and assessments that indicate that Hamas leaders, including Yahya Sinwar and his brother Muhammad, recently succeeded, along with others in the Hamas leadership, in escaping through the tunnels between Rafah and the Sinai Peninsula into Egyptian territory." It was also noted that "there is concern in Israel that they managed to escape with hostages."
The source also said that Israel knows of 8 large tunnels between the Sinai Peninsula and the Gaza Strip that can also accommodate cars and small trucks.
The IDF, the source said, believes that Hamas smuggled Iranian weapons, missiles, marches and technologies through these tunnels, in addition to smuggling its members through Sinai for training in Iran and Lebanon.
The Saudi website stated that they contacted the IDF spokesman for a response, but he refused to comment on either Sinwar's escape or the tunnels connecting the Sinai Peninsula to the Gaza Strip.
Military commentator Noam Amir responded: Security officials strongly deny the report in Saudi Arabia that Sinwar and his family fled through tunnels to Rafah.
Channel 12 also reported that senior Israeli officials denied: "We are not familiar with this."
