Following the ruling that starting this year, it is no longer possible to bring chametz into hospitals: Chief Rabbi Harav Lau today (Tuesday) appealed to the entire Israeli public, asking them to refrain from introducing chametz into hospitals.
Are you over the age of 60? This is the teaching for you from Rabbi Kanievsky, zt”l
In his letter, the Chief Rabbi writes: "The State of Israel was founded to be the sole state of the Jewish people. In this reality, there are things that characterize the uniqueness of the people, which are expressed in a multitude of ways. Judaism in Israel is not solely the private world of the individual, but is also found in the public sphere."
Rabbi Lau also writes: "I will pray that people will not need to be in hospitals, even during Passover, but whoever finds themselves in a hospital would do well to feel that they are in a Jewish state."
"I ask the entire Israeli public to refrain from bringing chametz into hospitals. With this step, we will express the recognition that we live in one place in a Jewish state and are considerate of one another."
His full letter:
On the eve of the holiday of Passover, I appeal to all citizens and residents of the State of Israel.
The State of Israel was established to be the sole state of the Jewish people. In this reality, there are things that characterize the uniqueness of the people, which are expressed in a multitude of ways.
Judaism in Israel is not solely the private world of the individual but is also found in the public sphere.
In recent days, the question of introducing leaven into hospitals has come up for discussion, something that has been strictly adhered to for years.
The goal was to allow those who, according to Halacha, cannot be in a place where there is chametz around them. Being in hospitals during Passover is not something a person chooses, and therefore a great deal of consideration and tolerance is required.
Unfortunately, certain elements examine this question from the perspective of 'individual rights' and turn a blind eye to additional points: those who wish to live according to Jewish law also have rights. Measuring a certain value against a certain value is primarily a question of worldview and not just of rights.
Unfortunately, some took advantage of a decision on this matter to try to highlight the fact that the State of Israel is separating from its Jewishness.
I will not enter into a discussion about these questions, but I am asking for goodwill. Please, let us find the path to follow and the action to take, and let us strive to be considerate of one another.
I will pray that no one will need to be in hospitals, even during Passover, but whoever is in a hospital would do well to feel that they are in a Jewish state. I ask the entire Israeli public to refrain from bringing leaven into hospitals. With this step, we will express the recognition that we live in one place in a Jewish state and are considerate of one another.
