After prolonged clashes within the opposition: MK Yaakov Asher of the Torah Banner was appointed today (Monday) to the position of Deputy Speaker of the Knesset.

The appointment of an MK is for a period of one year from the date of election.
United Torah Judaism Chairman MK Moshe Gafni: "I thank the heads of the opposition factions and MK Bezalel Smotrich for making possible the appointment of United Torah Judaism member MK Yaakov Asher as Deputy Speaker of the Knesset."
Following the agreements reached, the Knesset committee headed by MK Nir Orbach decided to recommend to the Knesset plenum to elect MK Yaakov Asher as temporary Deputy Speaker of the Knesset.
Committee Chairman, MK Nir Orbach: "I welcome the step. This is an important step."
MK Boaz Toporovsky of Mish Atid said: "I hope this is the beginning of a process, of ending the opposition's boycotts in the Knesset."
Gafni replied to Toporovsky: "You too need to be flexible, not just us."
The committee's attorney general noted that this is a temporary presidency of the Knesset, until a permanent presidency is elected.
The choice was approved unanimously.
In a discussion held this morning, the committee approved the membership of MK Yinon Azulai of Shas, Moshe Gafni, and Meir Porush of United Torah Judaism to the Joint Committee on the Knesset Budget and the Joint Committee on the Defense Budget.
