Yesh Atid chairman Yair Lapid attacked at noon (Monday), at the start of his faction's meeting, the proposal to hold direct elections for prime minister - as a way out of the political impasse.
""Yesterday I heard Netanyahu and Deri's proposal to now go to direct elections for prime minister. Let's call it by its real name: This is not a personal election, this is a fifth election. Instead of an Israeli unity government, more elections," Lapid said.
The chairman of Yesh Atid, leader of the "Boycott Bloc", continues his word-washing, and after the "Change Bloc", he begins to recite his declarations - "unity government.".
""We don't need more elections. There were elections. They ended with Netanyahu not having a government for the fourth time. If he fails to form a government, we will ask the president for the mandate to form an Israeli unity government. An Israeli unity government will put an end to this catastrophe. We will pass term limits on the prime minister. We will make sure that people with indictments and criminal convictions do not run the country.".
According to him, "The State of Israel needs unity. It needs a functioning government. It needs to see that its leaders know how to work together. In three weeks, there could be an Israeli unity government here. That is much better than a fifth election.".
Lapid was asked whether negotiations were underway between him and Naftali Bennett - and he replied: "There are negotiations underway and talking to everyone and the goal is to establish an Israeli unity government. A functioning government. Right, left and center.".
Regarding the Netanyahu-Bennett meeting being held today, Lapid said: "The unity bloc is larger than the Netanyahu bloc. I am conducting a dialogue with the entire political system, who are potential for an Israeli unity government and understand that Netanyahu needs to be separated.".
