Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu convened the heads of the right-wing bloc in his office this morning (Tuesday) to discuss preparations for the elections and plan to block attempts by Blue and White, Yisrael Beiteinu, and the Joint Arab List to establish a Knesset committee that will discuss Netanyahu's immunity request.
At the end of the meeting, it was agreed to put pressure on Knesset Speaker Yuli Edelstein so that he would not allow the plenary session to be convened as part of the discussions on Netanyahu's immunity request. This was to "prevent the possibility that during the election period the Knesset would turn into a circus."
Blue and White is seeking to hold the vote in the Knesset plenum, which was necessary to establish the Knesset committee, this week.
MK Miki Zohar claimed in an interview with Galei Tzahal that Knesset Speaker Yuli Edelstein could use his political power to stop the process of removing the prime minister's immunity.
"Even if the High Court decides that it must hold the debate in the Knesset plenum, it can say, 'Don't interfere with me' and not do it. It has the power to stop the process of removing immunity until after the elections."
MK Israel Eichler also addressed the demand this morning to convene the plenary to discuss the establishment of the Knesset committee - and called on Knesset Speaker Yuli Edelstein: "Do not give a hand to turning the Knesset into a marketplace for election propaganda against two million citizens who oppose the guillotine in the name of democracy. The Knesset must be completely objective during an election period. Even more so after the submission of the new and old lists."
Two weeks ago, MK Eichler warned the Knesset Speaker in a letter about this possibility and asked him to act to prevent the establishment of a Knesset committee so that the Knesset would not become a marketplace for election propaganda.
In a letter sent by MK Rabbi Eichler to the Knesset Speaker, it was stated: "The establishment of committees during an election period should not be allowed, with the understanding that these will become a political platform instead of real assistance to the public. If essential social committees such as the Public Inquiries Committee and the Welfare Committee are not established, then a political committee should not be established. The whole 'election recess' thing is intended to prevent the Knesset platform from turning into a city square and into mass propaganda. This is exactly what will happen if the Knesset committee discusses Netanyahu's immunity."
