Unimaginable: A security officer from the Nof Zion neighborhood in Jerusalem was attacked by terrorists and in response fired into the air.
The Nof Zion neighborhood located in Jerusalem found itself early this morning (Tuesday) receiving a barrage of gunfire aimed at residents' homes and at the security guards on site.
The neighborhood security officer was on security duty at the time, along with another resident. The two, who were targeted by the gunfire, felt their lives were in danger, and the officer fired several shots into the air - and called the police.
After numerous repeated requests from the security officer and other residents, the police arrived more than 20 minutes late. However, the police then informed the surprised security officer that he was being detained for questioning on suspicion of shooting in a built-up area. This without making any attempt to pursue the terrorists and arrest them.
The officer was taken to the police station, where he was questioned and arrested.
This morning, the security officer was brought to the Jerusalem Magistrate's Court for a hearing, where the police requested an extension of his detention by 6 days for investigation purposes.
With the intervention of lawyer Adi Kedar, who represents the suspect on behalf of the Honenu organization, the suspect was released by agreement under restrictive conditions and on bail.
""This is a bankruptcy of the Israel Police," says Attorney Kedar. "My client, a graduate of the elite patrol, has a family and no criminal record, acted as required, lawfully, and as expected of him when shots were fired at him from a passing vehicle and he felt his life was in immediate danger.".
""Unfortunately, the police, who were late to arrive at the incident, chose to arrest the victim and not the terrorists who attacked the Jewish homes and my clients. The police, in their decisions, are abandoning the security of Israeli citizens and giving terrorists and lawbreakers a hand to continue their terror.".
