The sanctions by the drivers of the Kavim bus company led to a violent incident in Beitar Illit this morning (Thursday): One of the committee members was run over by a driver who broke his strike, and was taken to Shaare Zedek Hospital in Jerusalem with back injuries, reports the Nana10 website.
The company's drivers have taken measures to try to improve their working conditions several times in recent weeks, and this morning they suspended travel in the ultra-Orthodox cities of Beitar Illit and Modi'in Illit for two hours, while the company's management is operating buses from alternative companies.
Nidal Git, one of the members of the Kavim committee, stood in front of one of the buses in Beitar Illit and asked the driver not to drive. However, the driver did not heed his request, started driving and hit Git, who fell to the road. He was treated by rescue forces.
As a sign of protest over the attack, the workers' committee, affiliated with the Workers' Power, decided to continue the strike for two more hours until 12:00.
"The act of operating buses by alternative companies is irresponsible," said Nissan Namani, one of the committee heads, "They are not authorized and not adapted to travel on public transportation."
Yaniv Bar-Ilan from the Workers' Force expressed regret over the incident and clarified to Nana10: "It is certain that the intention was not to kill, of course." The committee concluded: "We do not know what was said to the drivers who broke the strike, but the atmosphere in the area is violent."
The response from the Kavim management will be provided when received.
