In the weeks leading up to Operation Gideon Chariots II and the occupation of Gaza City, and in parallel with diplomatic attempts to stop it, Hamas' top brass held an internal discussion on one of the most dangerous plans formulated to date: the elimination of one of the Israeli abductees and the return of his body to Israel while presenting a false representation that he had been killed in an IDF attack.
Commentator Amit Segal revealed this evening (Wednesday) on Channel 12 that during the discussions, the organization even chose the hostage who was supposed to be murdered - a man whose publicized death, they claim, could have led to the most severe internal rift in Israeli society.
The bottom line: The terrorist organization is counting on public pressure to prevent the maneuver to the city.
But an unexpected event changed the picture: the attempted assassination of senior Hamas officials in Qatar played havoc, leading to weeks of severing ties between the parties.
Only after that were negotiations for the deal resumed, and preparations for the operation were temporarily halted.
