Volunteers from the Israel Police's Etzion-Yehuda Rescue Unit worked this afternoon (Wednesday) to assist a family from Bnei Brak - a couple of parents and their four young children, including a 3-year-old boy - who had gone out earlier today for a hike on the Ein Uzan trail in the Jerusalem hills and had gotten into trouble.
The travelers did not take the necessary precautions and did not prepare for the trip appropriately in terms of their clothing, shoes, the equipment they were carrying, a sufficient amount of water, and the weather prevailing in the area these days.
During the trip, they lost their way and at the same time their water supply ran out.
Based on their in-depth knowledge of the area, the unit's search teams analyzed and identified the group's location, and the rescue teams reached the hikers who were lost in the area and provided them with water.
After a brief questioning by the unit's medical team, they did not require medical assistance, and the rescue team guided them on how to continue their way off the track in the correct way.
Below are a number of highlights and recommendations for the traveling public for safe travel and a safe return home:
• It is important to know and prepare for the hiking route, and to adapt it to the ability and age of the hikers.
• You should bring an appropriate amount of water (at least 4 liters per traveler).
• You must obey the instructions of the Nature and Parks Authority inspectors and the security forces in the field.
• Members should be informed about the route, its start date and expected completion date, and its length and duration should be planned in order to finish it before dark.
• It is important to have an updated map and only travel on marked trails.
• Before setting off on a trip, it is recommended to bring appropriate clothing, comfortable walking shoes, a hat, and sunscreen.
• Bring flashlights and extra batteries for your cell phone.
Given the security situation, it is very important to follow the instructions of security officials and the IDF regarding the areas permitted on the trip.
In an emergency situation on the ground:
Call the police hotline 100 as soon as possible and follow the hotline's instructions. If there is no reception, try to safely reach a higher place and call.
It is important and recommended to install the "100 Emergency" app on your mobile phone, which helps in locating and arriving at the rescue forces in a short time.
